Technical Electives Guidelines for Undergraduates
- Twelve credits of ENCH (Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering) technical electives are required. It is recommended that they be taken during the senior year.
- The senior ENCH technical electives are 400-level chemical engineering courses, including ENCH468x, and a limited number of approved 400-level technical courses from outside chemical engineering. Students should select electives with the help of an academic advisor. Normally at least three of the four technical electives should be ENCH4XX; the fourth elective may be chosen from ENCH or from an approved list of non-ENCH technical courses. Business or non-technical courses are normally not approved.
- One of the electives must have significant mathematical
content selected from the list below. More than one of the
courses below may be selected as additional electives, subject
to the above constraint that at least three of the four electives
must be ENCH courses.
ENCH453 Applied Mathematics in Chemical Engineering
ENCH454 Chemical Process Analysis and Optimization
ENCH455 Model Predictive Control
ENCH476 Statistics and Experimental Design
ENCH496 Processing of Polymer Materials (may be selected to fulfill the mathematics content requirement only by students choosing the Nanotechnology and Macromolecular Science option)
MATH461 Linear Algebra for Scientists and Engineers - One of the electives must have significant biological
content selected from the list below. More than one of the
courses below may be selected as additional electives, subject
to the above constraint that at least three of the four electives
must be ENCH courses.
ENCH468N: Bionanotechnology
ENCH468T: Tissue Engineering
ENCH482 Biochemical Engineering
ENCH483 Bioseparations
ENCH484 Environmental Aspects of Biochemical Engineering
ENCH485 Biochemical Engineering Laboratory
ENCH468H Metabolic Engineering
BCHM461 Biochemistry I
BCHM463 Biochemistry of Physiology
BSCI4XX 400-level BSCI course - The two additional electives must be selected from the
list of courses below, subject to the constraint that at least three of the four
electives must be ENCH courses.

Other Technical electives approved by the Director for Undergraduate Studies
b,n Upon the approval of the academic advisor and written permission of the Department, a limited number of substitutions may be permitted. Substitutes, including ENCH468 Research (1-3 credits), must fit into an overall plan of study emphasis and ensure that the plan fulfills the accreditation design requirements. Students may elect to specialize in a specific area such as Biological Engineering or Nanotechnology and Macromolecular Science; or they may sample a variety of elective courses. Upon graduation, those who specialize in a particular technical area will receive a letter in recognition of their accomplishment from the Chair and the Director of Undergraduate Studies of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. To specialize in the Biological Engineering Option in Chemical Engineering, both additional electives must be selected from the subgroup of courses marked (b) above. To specialize in the Nanotechnology and Macromolecular Science Option in Chemical Engineering, both additional electives must be selected from the subgroup of courses marked (n) above.
