AIChE's National Capital Section's "Chemcycle" after school program was
honored last November, receiving the Gary Leach Award in recognition of
significant accomplishments towards AIChE's objectives in the areas of
career development and community service. The "Chemcycle" program is about
recycling of solid wastes and introduces engineering concepts to the
    youngsters in the program.

We have partnered with 4-H of Montgomery County in carrying out this
program at a middle school for three semesters, 10 to 12 sessions of one hour
per week. Since the program has been carried out during normal work week
hours, volunteers have been limited in the past to retired section members
or, in a couple of cases, Chem E's with highly flexible schedules.

Because of the success of the program, 4-H, in its last Extension Service
Newsletter, announced that, again in partnership with us, it is planning
to holding a "Chemcycle" program in the spring. We agreed to do the program
on Saturdays, either 2 or 3 hours each, on 4 or 5 Saturday mornings, from May
10 through June 7 at the 4-H facility on Muncaster Road in Derwood.

This is an opportunity for members who could not volunteer during the week
to volunteer -- possibly bringing along your own 6th, 7th or 8th graders to
participate in the program -- to get involved in this program introducing
engineering concepts to these youngsters. If you can participate on 3, 4,
or possibly 5 Saturday mornings from May 10 through June 7, we need you to
take this next step in carrying out this award winning program. The curriculum
is well established and there will not be much prep time involved.

For more information and to volunteer, contact any one of the following
people as soon as you can by e-mail or phone: David Richman, 301-320-5509,
    dmr0313@aol.com; Bruce Cranford, 301-340-0052,
bruce-cranford-pe@attglobal.net or, if you also want to enroll a
    youngster, Alga Piechocinski, 301-590-2804, ap28@umail.umd.edu.
