The National Capital Section needs volunteers for the after school program
we've been providing, in partnership with 4-H, at a middle school --
youngsters aged 11 to 14 -- in Montgomery County. The program, about solid
waste recycling, features hands on activities making paper, making "slime,"
making glass candle holders, using the properties of metals to separate them,
and introduces the youngsters to some basic engineering concepts used in
    recycling materials.

Volunteers are needed for the Fall program starting on October 3; It will be
on Thursdays from 3 PM to 4 PM. starting on October 3. There are 11 sessions
scheduled. Volunteers are not expected to participate in all sessions and
participation is flexible. About an hour of orientation and "training" will
be available in September, but is not critical.

We have a lead volunteer for each session and two or three other volunteers
to mentor the youngsters in the hands-on activities. The lead volunteers are
people already involved in the program. Thus we are looking for people whose
basic commitment will be from 3 to 4 PM once a week for 5 to 8 weeks plus
    their travel time.

Two of our current volunteers hold full time jobs but have the flexibility to
take a few hours a week for this worthwhile activity. The rest of us are
    retired and enjoying it.

We'd like to have enough volunteers so that next spring we can extend the
program to another school and to develop a second program about energy.

The Maryland Cooperative Extension Service 4-H Youth Development Program and
the Montgomery County Public Schools have been pleased with this program and
    encouraged its continuation.

Those of us who have been involved in it have enjoyed our experience and
working with the youngsters. The school we will be at, Argyle Middle School,
is on Aspen Hill road in Silver Spring, east of Georgia Avenue and just south
    of Leisure World.

Please let me know as soon as possible if you are interested in volunteering
or have any questions. And think about doing it; it's been quite rewarding!
