    "Energetic Materials Forum"
    Proposed New AIChE Forum

    August 5, 2002

Several members of AIChE, in cooperation with representatives from
AIChE headquarters, industry, government and academia, are creating a
new Energetic Materials Forum (EMF). The proposed EMF is for the
combined community of engineers and scientists who are developing and
applying sound scientific and engineering-based theories and practices
to energetic materials. The EMF will focus on the individual
    professional development, manufacturing, environmentally acceptable
disposal, and future needs development. The manufacturing of energetic
materials is not being addressed by other organizations.
    - Energetic Materials include but not limited too: energetic reactions,
    explosives, propellants, and pyrotechnics.
    - Technical interest includes: Manufacturing R&D, manufacturing,
processing, physical properties, disposal, environmental impacts, life
cycle, a viable workforce of the future, developing long range plans for
the energetic materials community, advancing state of the art,
reactions. The last two items would be joint with the American
Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).

The proposed goals and objectives of the EMF are to:
            a. Provide a forum for communication and networking among those
with an interest in the energetic materials
            b. Identify and address the professional needs of practicing
scientists, engineers, academics, business and design managers, R&D
modelers, and others interested in energetic materials.
            c. Establish a network of personnel and organizations that
identify and resolve issues relating to energetic materials.
            d. Coordinate, sponsor, cosponsor, and advertise relevant
programming, including crosscutting and special-initiative technical
    sessions and conferences.
            e. Promote interchange of ideas, concepts, know-how, and
experiences in energetic materials sciences and engineering.
            f. Encourage educators at all levels, particularly in chemical
engineering, to integrate concepts of energetic materials sciences and
    engineering into their curricula.
            g. Advocate curricula that prepare students for career energetic
    materials sciences and engineering.
            h. Promote lifetime learning through workshops and short courses.
            i. Provide centralized links to technical publications, computer
programs, and databases related to the energetic materials sciences and
    engineering.
            j. Coordinate with other interested organizations and associations
(e.g., AIAA, American Chemical Society (ACS), Joint Army, Navy, NASA,
and Air Force (Interagency Propulsion Committee) (JANNAF), and the
    International Pyrotechnics Society, Inc. (IPS))

The organizational meeting for establishing the EMF will be held at the
AIChE National Convention, Indianapolis, Indiana. November 6, 2002,
5:30 to 7:30 P.M., meeting room to be assigned. During the meeting,
there will be a discussion from a panel of industry, government, AIChE
and academia representatives, as to the needs for the EMF, structure,
and the role the EMF will play.
Following the panel, the discussion will be open to all attendees.
Participation in the organizational meeting and the EMF will be open to
AIChE members and non-members. If you are unable to attend the meeting,
but wish to participate in the EMF, or have comments relative to its
needs, structure, and role, or need more information, or have questions,
please contact one of the people below.
