AIChE National Capital Section Ballot for 2002-2003 Executive Committee

Candidate Biographies

Kin F Wong for Vice Chair:
I obtained my Ph.D in Chemical Engineering from University of Illinois. I
worked for Stauffer Chemical in San Francisco doing process development and
pollution control before joining the Federal government. I worked for EPA
and US Bureau of Mines in the areas of toxic substances and environmental
remediation. At present, I and with the DOT working on the safe
transportation of hazardous materials. In the past, I have served as
Treasurer and Coordinator for the Golden Jubilee National Meeting for NCS.
Christine Knott for Secretary:
Ms. Knott holds a degree in both Chemical Engineering and Chemistry from the
University of Maryland College Park. She is currently working of optimizing
the formulations and process designs of airbag propellant and advanced gun
propellants at Naval Surface Warfare Center, Indian Head Division. She is a
member of the AIChE, American Chemical Society, and the National Defense
industrial Association. She has been Chairperson of the membership
committee and coordinator of the NCS news letter.
Raymond A. Adomaitis for Secretary:
Ray Adomaitis is an Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering at the
University of Maryland. He holds a joint appointment with the Institute
for Systems Research and is the Associate Chair for Graduate Studies in
the Chemical Engineering Department. His research interests focus on
developing simulation methods for semiconductor manufacturing processes.
Currently, he holds the position of Secretary in the NCS of AIChE; he
created and still helps maintain the NCS website and has served as the
section Newsletter editor.
Mathew Davey for Treasurer:
Mathew graduated in 1991 from Pennsylvania State University with a BS in
Chemical Engineering. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the
Commonwealth of Virginia and the State of New Jersey. The majority of his
career has been with KEMRON Environmental Services, Inc. During that time
he has work on remediation of a former rail yard in Baltimore, investigation
of several DOD base realignment and closure sites, conducted several audits
of process safety management programs for chemical manufacturing plants, and
prepared risk management plans for chemical manufacturing plants. Currently
he is the manager of KEMRON's Vienna VA office.
Maria K. Burka for Director:
Maria K. Burka is program director in charge of the Process and Reaction
Engineering program in the Chemical and Transport System Division of the
National Science Foundation. Previous positions include Senior Scientist
with the US Environmental Protection Agency, Assistant Professor in the
Chemical Engineering Department of the University of Maryland, College Park
and process design engineer with Scientific Design Co in New York City. She
Received her BS and MS from MIT and MA and PhD from Princeton University.
Professional; activities in AIChE include presently being the Chair and
Programming Chair of the Catalysis and Reaction Engineering Division (CRE)
and past chair of the National Capital Section as well as Director and
Secretary/Treasurer of the Computing and Systems Technology Division and
Director of the CRE Division. She has also been active in the Council for
Chemical Research, the American Association of University Women, the Society
of Women Engineers, and Women in Science and Engineering.
