EVENT: Northern Virginia Regional Science & Engineering Fair (Grades 7 - 12)
TIME: Saturday, March 9, 2002
8:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon
LOCATION: Wakefield High School
Arlington, Virginia
REQUIREMENTS: No experience necessary! Training is provided! To be a
judge, you only need to have a technical background in any field of science
or engineering.
BACKGROUND: Judges will review exhibits of the best environmental science
projects of students from area schools. The judges (in teams) informally
chat with the students to determine the merits of their projects and give
helpful suggestions such as possible explanations of results and alternative
approaches for future projects. You do not need to live in Virginia to be a
judge; nor do you need to work at EPA! By the way, I recruit judges for the
Environmental Science category. If you would prefer to judge in another
category, I can direct you to the appropriate Chairman. The other categories
are Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Earth & Space Sciences, Medicine and Health,
Microbiology, Mathematics, Biochemistry, Engineering,
Behavioral and Social Sciences, Computer Science, and Zoology.
BENEFITS: As a judge, you will review a variety of interesting science
projects. You will meet and encourage enthusiastic young students. As an
extra bonus, you will receive a free, full breakfast served by genuine
cafeteria workers (in hairnets!!!).
SIGNING UP: If you are interested, please contact Martha Otto at EPA
for more details at 703/603-8853 or by email at otto.martha@epa.gov. Please
try to respond as soon as possible, as she will need to submit her list of
judges early.
I encourage your participation,
Craig Matthiesen
