AIChE & Engineers' Week 2002
AIChE needs you!
(Bruce Cranford)
AIChE is a sponsor of Engineers' Week (www.eweek.org) and the Future
City Competition (www.futurecity.org). Engineers' Week will be held
Saturday, February 16, 2002, though Wednesday, February 20, 2002.
During that week, AIChE will sponsor three activities, and needs
volunteers to make these activities a success.
The first activity involves presenting a special award in the Future
City Competition for the best use of bio-technology/materials/process in
a Future City. The Future City Competition is celebrating its tenth
anniversary. It's purpose is to foster interest in math, science, and
engineering for seventh and eight-grade students using hands-on, real
world applications to create and build a Future City. Regional
competitions are held throughout the US, and culminate in 30 regional
winning teams coming to Washington, D.C. for the national competition
during Engineers Week. AIChE will evaluate the 30 regional winners and
make a special award for the best use of
bio-technology/materials/process.
The award consists of a plaque and savings bond for each student on the
winning team. The evaluation and award will be made on Monday, February
18, 2002, at the Hyatt Regency Capital Hill, Washington, D.C.
To make this happen, AIChE, needs four to six volunteers, knowledgeable
in bio-technology/materials/process, to evaluate and select the Futures
City Special Award Winner. This involves a few easily completed
activities by the volunteers:
1. Develop three to four questions to be asked of the students by the
AIChE Volunteer Judges about the student's use of
bio-technology/materials/process in their Future City entry.
2. Develop a simple evaluation and scoring form to be completed by the
volunteers, based on the response of the student team to the questions.
3. Rank the results, and in concert with other AIChE volunteers, select
a winner.
The creation of the questions and evaluation form must be completed
between now and Engineers' Week. The actual interviewing, evaluation,
and award will be done on Monday, February 18, 2002, between 10 AM and 2
PM at the Hyatt Regency, Capital Hill, Washington, D.C. Volunteer
judges are also needed. If interested, please contact Bruce Cranford,
301-340-0052, Bruce-Cranford-PE@attglobal.net.
The second AIChE sponsored activity is a booth to help students learn
about chemical engineering by making "Slime". This event will take
place on E-Week Family Day, Saturday, February 16, 2002, at the National
Building Museum, 4th St, NW, Washington, D.C. (Judiciary Square Metro
Stop), between 10 AM and 4 PM. Volunteers are needed to help staff the
booth and have fun. Having personally done this for two years, I know
that the volunteers have as much fun as the students. To volunteer,
contact Jill Clauss (703) 590-9536 , jclauss@alum.rpi.edu
The third AIChE sponsored activity is a booth for Chemcycle. This will
take place on E-Week Family Day, Saturday, February 16, 2002, at the
National Building Museum, 4th St., NW, Washington, D.C. (Judiciary
Square Metro Stop), between 10 AM and 4 PM. The Chemcycle After-school
program is a joint partnership with AIChE, 4-H and Montgomery County,
MD, public schools that teaches sixth, seventh, and eight grade students
about engineering and solid waste recycling through hands-on
activities. As part of the program, the students create large posters
highlighting some aspect of recycling. The posters, students, parents,
and perhaps a teacher and a 4-H educator, along with AIChE section
members will be at the booth explaining Chemcycle and recycling to the
students and families attending Family Day. Volunteers are needed to
expand this activity locally and nationally. Contact Montgomery County
4-H at 301-590-9638 (http://www.agnr.umd.edu/montgomery) or Dave Richman
at 301-320-5509; dmr0313@aol.com for additional information about the
Chemcycle program.
