The National Capital Section of the AIChE has scheduled a luncheon meeting
on March 14th 2001. The two invited guest speakers are Carolyn D. Fernandez
and Alganesh Piechocinski from the National 4-H Council.
ABSTRACT: In an effort to meet AIChE goals in both career development and
community service, the National Capital Section has been working with 4-H to
develop and deliver an after-school program about engineering concepts. In
January, we completed a program on solid waste recycling at the Parkland
Middle School in Montgomery County. 4-H has a presence in every state;
almost all of its activities are funded through the Department of
Agriculture's Extension Service. Partnering with 4-H has been very
positive for us; the program on March 14 will be about the modern 4-H, how
it impacts youngsters, its role in career development activities, and
continuing our partnership.
SPEAKERS: Carolyn D. Fernandez, Director, Corporate Resource Development at
the National 4-H Council.
Ms. Fernandez provides overall program management and resource development
for the Youth Corporate Connections (YCC) workforce preparation initiative.
She has expertise in corporate relations, resource development, program

Cooperative Extension System in the area of workforce preparation
technical assistance. Ms. Fernandez has a Bachelor of Arts degree in
International Studies from George Mason University in Virginia.
Alganesh Piechocinski, Extension Educator for 4-H Youth Development,
University of Maryland's Extension Service in Montgomery County.
Ms. Piechocinski's professional expertise is in Youth and Adult Education,
Safety and Conflict Resolution Education, and in Diversity Education.
Vice-President for the Maryland Association of Extension Educators,
Ms. Piechocinski has conducted classes in career development, safety,
conflict resolution, food and nutrition, and personal development. She is
a committee member of Safe Kids Coalition, and state workforce
preparation, among others, and has presented many workshops on youth
related issues in schools and after-school settings in Montgomery
County. Ms. Piechocinski holds an MA in Health Care Administration from
Central Michigan University.

NCS CHAPTER NOTES
NCS WORKING WITH 4-H:
By David M. Richman
The National Capital Section, working with 4-H has successfully implemented
an after-school program about recycling of solid waste in a middle school
(6, 7 and 8 grade) in Montgomery County. Four NCS members have been
involved in developing and implementing the program; we have had advice
and guidance from 4-H and Montgomery County School professionals.
Continuation and extension of this program in Montgomery County will
depend on increasing the number of our volunteers in Montgomery County.
We'd like to add 4 to 8 more volunteers. The time commitment will be for 2
to 3 hours per week for 10 weeks plus the time needed to become familiar
with the lesson plans we have already developed and preparation to lead
two or three of the weekly sessions. Those of us currently involved are
retired, and while we do some consulting and are involved in other
volunteer activities, we have found the time to develop and implement this
program. We need others to join us to extend implementation. The
youngsters in an after-school program are there because they want to be
and we have been delighted by their responsiveness and enthusiasm. If you
want to explore this activity, the commitments involved, and the strong
support we have been receiving from both 4-H and Montgomery County, feel
free to contact any of us who have been involved: Dave Richman at
301-320-5509 or dmr0313@aol.com, Dan Wiley at 301-770-6185 or
jmdw9169@erols.com, Bruce Cranford at 301-340-0052 or
Bruce-Cranford@NSPEmail.com, or Alan Luehrmann at 301-929-8975.
